B. Evaluation: Forms and Conventions

To evaluate my forms and conventions I have used these screen grabs to show how I have responded to the forms and conventions of the rock music genre. I have chosen ‘Band’ as my magazine title as the band culture is a big part of the rock genre. I have used the ‘Deparaved’ font from ‘www.dafont.com’. I think that this has worked well as it has targeted a specific part of the audience but has also left a wide enough section as well.

The mise-en-scene of the images in my magazine is shown mainly through the costumes and props. I have used the costumes to give my models a ‘rockstar’ look and also I have used the props to show this such as the drum sticks, sunglasses and cowboy hat. I have chosen my models because they all have a similar look to the stereotypical ‘rockers’ for example they all have long hair. I think that the mise-en-scene of this magazine has been effective in representing the forms and conventions of the genre.

For my written content I have used a casual style of language but haven’t used any crude language. I have also suggested the genre of the magazine by using a dark colour scheme and used the conventions. I think that I have successfully showed my understanding of the forms and conventions of the genre as I have used these elements in my magazine.

C. Evaluation: Representation

For the images in my magazine I have tried to emulate iconic magazines of the genre. I will use these two images to show the similarities and differences between my images and professional magazine images. The postures of the two images are both stereotypical pose and I have used the left image for an iconic front cover pose like the image on the right. The angles of these shots are very similar and are common in front cover images of magazines. The lighting is effective in both the images although it is more distinctive in the right image as it is in black and white.

The magazine represents the social group of rock loving teenagers who are also interested in the ‘indie’ sub culture of the genre. The images are targeted an audience of the mainstreamers psychographics.

D. Evaluation: Institutions

I think that the publisher that would most likely publish my magazine would be ‘IPC Media’ as it is the UK’s leading consumer magazine publisher and publishes NME Magazine (right) which is very similar to my magazine. My magazine would be distributed like NME Magazine also and Kerrang magazine and would be distributed in common magazine sellers such as ASDA and WH Smith. I would also have a website for my magazine which would have an archive of previous magazines as well as features on the latest music news and more. Also I would try to have synergy with my product by having deals and competitions by cooperating with well known companies linked with the genre such as band merchandise.

E. Evaluation: Target Audience

This is an image of my target audience (Right, source:http://www.hindscc.edu/Pics/Departments/StudentLife/StudentLife_2.jpg). My target audience is average students or teenagers who enjoy music and films.
My target audience is specifically targeted at out-going students who can afford to go to many gigs or buy cds but is also aimed at the younger generation that enjoy them. They would buy my magazine because it is aimed at them and contains content that they would be attracted to such as gig news and the latest band news.
